A different oil-base in each type of soap
The oil and lye combination is what comes into mind when thinking about handmade soaps. There are several online calculators for that, and thousands of recipes are available to start. Using natural, plant-based, and/or organic products for the oil phase or as add-ons can enhance the soaps’ quality and guide the search for a product if you are looking to buy some.
However, there is much more. Although all-natural soaps have great properties from their basic components to cleanse and keep the moisture of the skin, they are not all the same, and mixing oil with lye can be more complex than it seems. Oils have different characteristics, and soaps are usually made from a combination of them. There are rules for the proportions, but also space for creativity and testing, especially when a customized version is needed.
NatIdeas went through a scientific-creative process while developing its recipes. There were many tests and failures, and it took some time (besides joys and frustration) before some basic recipes came out. Some combinations were excluded forever, and others received adjustments to finally become what they are now.
We ended up with five basic doughs when trying to highlight the special properties of the oils. Five different options for different tastes are distributed in our products, with some being more moisturizing, others more cleansing, a balanced combination for any type of skin, as well as two gentle versions to specific needs.
